The Benefits and Virtues of Fasting On The Day of Ashura

Azan e Sahar Present - The Benefits and Virtues of Fasting On The Day of Ashura Today, we will discuss the significane of day of Ashura and the benefits of fasting on the day of Ashura, 10th of Muharram, the first month in the Islamic lunar calendar. • On the day of Ashura '(tenth of Muharram) Allah forgave Prophet Adam, • Allah saved Prophet Noah enabling his arch to land peacefully and victoriously, • Allah Almighty saved Prophet Ibrahim from the tyrant Nimrood, • Allah united Prophet Yaqoob with his son Yussuf, • Allah gave victory to Prophet Musa and split the sea for him and for the children of Israel and defeated Pharaoh. • Allah forgave Prophet Dawud and granted Prophet Sulayman great dominion. • And on that day Allah brought Prophet Yunus safely out of the whale. • On tenth of Muharram Allah cured Prophet Ayoub. • And on that day of Ashura, on Friday the year 61 after the hijrah, a great tragedy befell the Muslims, the killing of the grandson of the messenger of Allah peace be upon him, the killing of Imam Abu Abdullah al-Hussain the son of Hazrat Ali and Hazrat Fatima, may Allah be pleased with her. Fasting on Muharram 10, known as the Day of 'Ashura', expiates for the sins of the past year. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived in Madinah in year 622, he found that the Jews there fasted on Muharram 10 and asked them the reason for their fasting on this day. They said," This is a blessed day. On this day Allah saved the Children of Israel from their enemy in Egypt and so Prophet Musa, [Moses] fasted on this day giving thanks to Allah." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "We are closer to Musa than you are." He fasted on that day and commanded Muslims to fast on this day. (Al-Bukhari) 'Abbas reported: The Messenger of Allah fasted on the day of 'Ashura' and ordered the people to fast on it. The people said, "O Messenger of Allah, it is a day that the Jews and Christians honor." The Prophet said, "When the following year comes, Allah willing, we shall fast on the ninth." The death of the Prophet came before the following year. (Muslim and Abu Dawud) Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “The best fast after Ramadaan is the month of Allah Muharram.” Narrated by Muslim. In another hadeesh Prophet Muhammad Peace be upon him said “Fast one day before it and one day after it" Al-Bayhaqi This report indicates that it is mustahabb to fast on the ninth, the tenth and the eleventh. Imam Ahmad said: whoever wants to fast ‘Ashoora’ should fast on the ninth and the tenth, unless there is some uncertainty about the months, in which case he should fast for three days. Al-Mughni, 4/441 Thus, according to scholars, you may choose to fast 'Ashura' on three days (ninth, tenth, and eleventh); two days (ninth and tenth); or one day only (the tenth). We must perform good deads in abundance during the month of Muharram and fast on 9th and 10th or 10th and 11th of this month. May Allah Almighty give us guidance and strength to benefit immensely from this holy month.
